Black Tie Makeup

New York, NY

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of attending a number of black tie events.  From formal weddings, to charity events, galas, and dinners, I’ve learned how to do an elevated makeup look that is natural and relatively quick.  I usually avoid getting my hair and makeup done because unfortunately more often times than not, I end up feeling uncomfortable with caked on makeup and crazy hair.  My formal makeup look takes about 20 minutes from start to finish.  The night before an event, I’ll throw on a face mask or use this clay mask to take away impurities.  In the morning, I don’t use a face wash, I simply splash my skin with cold water.  I don’t overly wash my face because natural oils are essential for healthy, glowing skin.  I do however, exfoliate with this 3 times/week after a workout.  To achieve my formal makeup look – I start with this moisturizer (I also love this one.)  I then use this foundation primer under my eyes, on my nose and on my cheekbones and cover it with this foundation that I rub into my skin using a dime size amount on my index finger.  I brush this bronzer in “Bali Brown” over my cheekbones, nose, and jawline.  Then I use this eye shadow in “Rose Gold” as a base, this darker eye shadow in “Tuxedo” on the outer edges of my eye, and blend the two together with the darkest color shadow from this palette.  I line my eyes with this liner in “Marlene Midnight” and smudge shadow into the liner so it looks more smokey and natural.  A strong brow frames your face – and I swear by this brow filler in “Mahogany” which I apply with this brush.  For mascara I love this one.  I apply 3 coats (I wait about 5 minutes to apply the third coat before heading out the door), and finish my look off with this lip color in “C-Thru”.  If I’m feeling super fancy I’ll throw on these fake lashes.  My formal makeup routine is almost the same as my everyday one – except I just go heavier on the bronzer, foundation, and mascara – and use darker eyeshadows.  The secret to creating that gorgeous smokey eye is getting a brush like this and really blending it into the outer crease of your eye.  It takes a bit of practice to feel comfortable using it, but this brush is a game changer for any makeup look!

I totally agree with your black tie make-up mentality. You should still look like yourself for special occasions….just amped up a bit. Too much heavy make-up tends to age or harden someone too. A nice bold red lip with killer eyelashes and luminous skin would also work. :)
