Decorating an entire house is a slow, but steady process and we are excited to be thinking about our basement/family room area next! Our basement will essentially become a family room where we can relax, watch movies, and comfortably seat 10+ people. Right now our current family room/living room area upstairs is great, but it’s more formal than a typical family room. The basement will be the perfect in between.
Family Room Design
I love to mock up a simple design layout in Photoshop before purchasing anything. It’s an easy way to get a feel for what a room will look like and readjust as needed. I centered the room around the sectional I wanted. And I knew I wanted a neutral L shaped sectional to fit the space. I then chose a rug to make the area feel warmer. I love a patterned rug and the colors in this one are beautiful.
From there, I chose a coffee table that would compliment both the sofa and rug styles and colors. Then I chose a side table, table lamp (still on the fence about this one, but I have a few other options I’m mulling over), and lastly the 2 side chairs. I rarely like to use patterns when it comes to furniture, but the subtle, neutral stripe fabric in these chairs is timeless and ties in nicely with the rug.
All of the pieces I chose blend together without looking cookie cutter. They play off each other well, while each standing out in their own unique way. The overall vibe/theme I was going for was relaxed, cozy, neutral, updated classic. Our basement floors are going to be a thick jute carpet (they’re an ugly tile right now that I can’t wait to get rid of!) so the patterned rug will really pop against the jute.
Family Room Accessories
I want the room to be bright and airy, so I don’t want to clutter it with too many accessories. I’m thinking of bringing in a few different textures like these subtle velvet pillows, linen pillows, maybe even a quirky floor lamp, these fun straw floor pillows, and ceramics. I really love these abstract prints.
